Okay it’s done! I’ve done it. I’ve placed my order for a Macbook Pro. But it’s not the new ones you’re thinking of. I’ve been waiting for quite some time for Apple to refresh the Macbook family and that time has come and gone. The new Macbooks look beautiful, internally and externally. There’s some great innovation going on and some revolutions in laptop engineering. But all that R&D and new engineering didn’t come without cutbacks and compromises. The new Macbooks are missing the beloved Firewire 400 ports, DVI and mouse button. Hang on what? Yes, Apple has once again done the impossible and moved from a 1 button trackpad to a zero button trackpad. The button of course, is the trackpad itself. Graphics also haven’t made any substantial improvements over the 8600GT. On top of that, the Pro line does not offer true HybridSLI capabilities. One card merely substitutes the other in high end graphics situations. Finally, little has changed in terms of the CPU clock speed and chips being used in the new models. Perhaps the next round of speed bumps will offer a greater departure from the current specs. All of this culminated into my final decision to purchase the previous Macbook Pro (Penryn) after months of waiting. At $500 less the retail price I should mention : )
