How to: Control remote pc/mac with an iPhone

Ah the joys of living in the Digital Age. Have you ever found yourself stuck at the office only to realize that you forgot to download last nights episode of Heroes? What a mediorcre evening you’ve got ahead of you if you forgot. Never fear! You, my friend, live in the digital age where we’ve got electric cars, flat screen tvs and touchscreen computers. You’ve also got the internet in your pocket if you’ve got an iPhone. And now you’ve got the power to control other computers over the internet with your iPhone. You know I could write a tutorial on how to use your Dell laptop and login to your home pc via ssh, vpn and vnc but hey where’s the fun in that?

How to control your home pc with an iPhone

What you’ll need:

iPhone/iPod Touch (w/internet connection)
Anchorfree’s Hot Spot Shield link
logmein account <—- signup for the free account before you start.
Logmein Ignition software

Once you’ve laid out the foundation for this process it becomes mind-numbingly simple to gain access to your home pc from your phone. Access to your pc is just a few swipes and touches away.

So let’s get started.

Set up pc/mac to accept Logmein connections. Logmein is a widely popular and secure platform for accessing remote computers that you make available once you’ve signed up for an account. They’ve recently released a native app on the iTunes App store called Logmein Ignition. It’s kinda pricey so wait for a sale otherwise its highly recommended. (It’s available here too. But that’s a whole ‘nother tutorial.) The mac/pc desktop clients are free. So you can install the software on any computer that you need to have access to. I think the free account only gives you access to about 5 computers. Also, make sure the computer you want to control has a mac or windows login/password setup and that you’ve made a note of it somewhere safe. This adds an extra layer of security.

Once you’ve signed up for an account go ahead and log-in on their website. In your account you’ll have the ability to add new computers you want to control. Adding a new computer also installs the software on the computer you’re using. Save the installers to a usb stick if you want to install the client on other computers.

So at this point you’ve got the iPhone Ignition app and the client desktop software installed and you’re almost ready to go.

AnchorfreeSecure the connection. Assuming everything is gravy at this point you’re probably on your way to connecting to your pc. What you might want to do is head over to Anchorfree’s website and punch in these settings. Since the iPhone will connect over Wifi or 3G you’ll probably want to secure the connection depending on where you are in world. Whether you’re at the office, a local hotspot, or on the road. Chances are the information you’re shuffling through the air can be picked up by hackers or people looking to compromise your network. It could be that your IT admin has blocked off access to Logmein so that you don’t go controlling their computers at work. Hot Spot Sheild will create a secure VPN tunnel so that you can connect to any network securely without worrying about your data being accessed without your knowing. Logmein does a good job of encrypting data but you can never be too careful. When you’re entering your VPN info into the iPhone click on “Get Account ID” and the website generates a login/password for you. Follow the rest of the instructions and you’re almost done!

Check to see if you can connect without enabling VPN. On the iPhone, launch Logmein Ignition and enter your credentials. After doing that you’ll be presented with another login screen. This is the login/pass to logon to your computer. Upon successful login you’ll be presented with a screen that explains how to control the remote pc. Think of the interface as a laptop touchpad. Double-clicking anywhere will register a response wherever the mouse is sitting on the screen. This becomes clear once you use it. There are tools lined up along the bottom so that, you can for example, bring up the keyboard or send a [control+alt+delete] for those awkward moments when your pc does not respond. Clicking the X ends the remote session. When you’re done testing you’ll probably want to stick with sessions with VPN enabled. On the iPhone, simply go to Settings / VPN and move the switch from OFF to ON. Assuming all your VPN settings were entered correctly, you should be as good as gravy. Mmm…gravy.

Now go watch Heroes!

Four Finger Salute on your Pre-Unibody Mac

Mac OS 10.5.6

This being my first official post– I thought I’d start out with a tech tip just to kick things off. Apple recently released Mac OS 10.5.6 to the joy of many mac users out there who were hoping for something to be released before the christmas holidays. How thoughtful of Apple to give people an early xmas gift. Well it could be a good or bad thing depending on your experience with it. My experience was rather pleasant to say the least. My Macbook Pro sucked down the 190mb update and dutifully updated the system without any problems. Feel kinda sorry for all the people who seem to be having problems with the update. The update brings some much need polishing to the overall system and updates some vital components like MobileMe, Airport, Bluetooth, Time Machine and Mail.

However, what’s most interesting about the update are the small little tweaks under the hood and some changes that aren’t so hidden. The update moves the Trackpad into its own preference pane which separates it from the keyboard and mouse. I like it. Makes it easier to find. Although, what seems to be missing is what the New Macbook/Pro users have been used to for some time. And that’s the four finger gestures exclusively available to the new laptops. I wanted some four finger lovin too! (Um, you know what I mean.) So I went searching through the forums. Low-and-behold, there were others who wanted this feature too!
How to add Four Finger Gestures to your Pre-Unibody Laptop
Here it is. Add some four finger magic to your multi-touch laptop. Now, I’ve only been able to test this on a early-2008 Macbook Pro (Penryn). So your mileage may very. Update: Apparently, it works with the previous Macbook Airs too.

Optional: Perform complete Time Machine backup before you try any of this. Just in case. It’s not that serious a mod but you never know.

(1) First you need to update your laptop to 10.5.6. It’s been done in 10.5.5 but its cleaner and easier with the point 6 release. Once you’ve done that and you didn’t have any of the aforementioned problems then move on to the next step.
(2) You’re gonna want to backup an extension file in your system. The file is named AppleUSBMultitouch.kext and you’ll find it in /system/library/extensions folder. Once you’ve safely backed it up replace it with the file in step 3.
(3) Next you’re going to delete the extension you just backed up and replace it with a modified version. Which you can get here. Now your mac is going to ask you for your admin password so make sure you have that handy. Copy the modified .kext file to /system/library/extensions
and then you’re done.
(4) Finally, just make sure you run Apple’s Disk Utility and repair permissions. Reboot.

And you should see a new four finger gesture option in preferences. Yay! Joy. Happy Holidays!

Update: This totally still works for 10.5.7. Just thought y’all should know. Macbook Pro 2008/Macbook Air A & B Rev./ Sound off in the comments if you agree/disagree. Thanks!

Well guess what?

Blogger is garbage. Crap. Pathetic. I think we’re spoiled here on WordPress. Everything works and it is stupid easy to use. So I thought I was going to start a new blog on Blogger the other day only to find out that Blogger is a piece of crap. Many features, simple features, did not work. Posting a picture proved to be ridden with errors. Nothing is accessible. The main draw to use blogger is to be able to install adsense easily. That, fortunately, was easy to do. However, I don’t think I will blog there because I had such a poor experience. Can’t believe its a google product. And I’m such a google-whore. What a shame. Hopefully they’ll fix it in the future. Oh well. Anybody know of any good blogging platforms that work with adsense?

If you Meat Kevin you Meta Kevin

They say you shouldn’t put all your eggs in one basket. Well, that’s exactly what I’ve been trying to do around here and its proven to be a really tough blog to keep up with. I would say that I’m more of the occasional blogger. Blogging when when I see a need for it. This blog started off as a journal about me, my life, my food and my tech. But it became a blog that was unfocused and too random. When I wanted to run on and on about technology it just didn’t feel like the right place to do that. So I’m going to trim down this blog and start a new blog. (Didn’t see that coming huh?) Yeah, this blog will continue to feature random bits of my life but it’ll be tech free. Its just too big of a topic to cram into this personal blog. It deserves a blog of its own! I will update this blog less frequently but if you would like to hear about my rants, reviews and discoveries on the tech-side of things hit-me-up at http://metakevin.blogspot.com/

About Me

Hi, I'm Kevin. I eat meat. Always been a carnivore, always will be. Join me on my adventures in life, food and technology! (Sure, what the heck.) This blog will often lend itself to personal opinions on food, technology , style and other snippets of randomness that make up my lifestyle. Stick around and hopefully I can keep things interesting around here. Update Schedule: Just in case you were wondering. I usually update this blog at least once per week. And more sporadically or frequently depending on what's going on in my life. But generally check back with me weekly and thanks!
