The Palm Pre

The Palm Pre is truly the realization of what is fundamentally and painfully missing from the iPhone. The inherent void and glaring omissions that plague the iPhone and its users were in one-fell-swoop answered with Palm’s announcement Friday of their completely new mobile device. Not only were there prayers answered, there were ideas and features that users had not even realized that they had needed. Now I may be overstating it when I say this (also consider that the phone hasn’t been released yet as of this writing) but it seems like Palm is the only company out there that really and I mean really gets it. When it comes to the mobile space, their idealogies and metaphors on simplicity in UI and transparency in user experience are rivaled by few and admired by many. It all comes at a vital time as the market moves more aggressively into the smartphone arena. The technologies used to bring about cohesiveness in a world where users information lives fragmented in arbitrary spaces on remote databases or in the cloud or on a computer. I don’t think I need to say much more as it is covered extensively elsewhere. But what does this mean for our beloved iPhone? Could the Pre spell doom for what was seemingly the so-called “Jesus phone”? I think in either case this will clearly represent a victory for proponents of choice and will definitely instill healthy competition into an otherwise polarized smartphone market. Hopefully Apple and RIMM hear this call loud and clear. There’s a New kid in town and its the Palm Pre.

This video will possibly change your expectations for what any smartphone can do or for any mobile device for that matter. Truly groundbreaking work happening at Palm. To be clear, I would argue that it is not the device itself that is groundbreaking but the unique fashion in which Palm chose to integrate the latest technologies. The way they chose to address many of the problems mobile users are faced with, when it comes to multi-tasking, organizing and streamlining information. If you watch the keynote you’ll see what I mean. Palm was very careful to ensure that people understand that this is not hype. The Pre is real and its coming. For their sake and for the sake of the smartphone market it had better be real. Compelling stuff.

I’ll touch on this once again when it’s released and in the hands of users.

Happy 2009 everybody!

About Me

Hi, I'm Kevin. I eat meat. Always been a carnivore, always will be. Join me on my adventures in life, food and technology! (Sure, what the heck.) This blog will often lend itself to personal opinions on food, technology , style and other snippets of randomness that make up my lifestyle. Stick around and hopefully I can keep things interesting around here. Update Schedule: Just in case you were wondering. I usually update this blog at least once per week. And more sporadically or frequently depending on what's going on in my life. But generally check back with me weekly and thanks!
