Conficker C is the latest variant of a two-stage malicious worm. The first stage infects a computer and makes it part of a network of host machines, then waits for instructions from the second stage of the worm. The dangerous virus is scheduled to be released on tomorrow Wednesday, 04/01/2009 (April Fool’s Day). The virus, will travel via peer-to-peer communications and local network traffic. It also can be carried from one computer to another on a USB thumb drive or any other portable storage device.
It is highly recommended that users make sure their anti-virus software is up to date, their systems have been patched with the latest Microsoft Operating System patches and that caution be used with any e-mail and peer-to-peer communication, as well as the use of social networking Web sites. Be very leery of clicking on links, even from “friends” as there may be a virus buried in the link that you click on.
If your system shows symptoms such as:
1. Firewall and anti-virus keep turning off
2. Account lockout policies being reset automatically.
3. Certain Microsoft Windows services such as Automatic Updates, Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS), Windows Defender and Error Reporting Services disabled.
4. Domain controllers responding slowly to client requests.
5. System network becoming unusually congested.
6. Websites related to anti-virus software becoming inaccessible
